A HISTORY OF ACCEPTANCE AND LOVE

Since Provincetown’s founding, it has been a welcoming haven for people who might be considered “outsiders” in other parts of the world. First, it was home to immigrant Portuguese fishermen, then a travel destination for artists, actors, playwrights, and poets from a variety of backgrounds. In the early 1900s, according to the Provincetown Chamber of Commerce, many of these creatives “found Provincetown to be a place where there was freedom to express sexual preferences and a sense of acceptance which the rest of the world had yet to learn.”

Provincetown has been characterized as a safe place to be gay for over a century. Over the years, it has continued its tradition as a place of tolerance, harmony, and love for the LGBT community. Now, it is known as the oldest gay resort town in the country.
