The History Behind the Celebration

For over 60 years, the Provincetown Portuguese Festival & Blessing of the Fleet commemorates the rich heritage of the brave Portuguese travelers who discovered our peninsula. Every year, there is a large mass service at St. Peter’s Church. Then, the celebratory march towards the sea follows the ceremony. The march ends at MacMillan Wharf. As you arrive at the harbor for the Blessing of the Fleet, you’ll see beautifully decorated boats with flags flying high and colors filling the air.

What You’ll Experience

Known for its incredible celebrations and amazing culinary treats, the Provincetown Portuguese Festival & Blessing of the Fleet features the freshest seafood. The festival begins with on Thursday evening with the “Share Our Table” event where local restaurants serve their most mouth-watering entrees. Sprinkled with the freshest spices and richest flavors, you’ll be delighted by the delicious lobster, shrimp, oysters, and clams. And, we encourage everyone to bring cash with them to cover the cost of beer, wine, and some of the food.

As you walk around with your food and drinks, check out the array of activities to enjoy. On Saturday of the weekend festival, you’ll enjoy a parade held for the Portuguese Festival. There will also be face painting, live music, and most importantly, dancing. Traditional Portuguese dances bring the crowds to life with extraordinary numbers and fast-paced moves. You’re sure to enjoy the smooth flow of the Samba and other entertaining dances while you are there!
